Spirit of Elijah!

“….they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha” and they came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him (II Kings 2:15).

Here we read as “The Spirit of Elijah.” As Elijah had been filled by the Spirit, he was able to do great, supernatural miracles with the power of that spirit. He guided the land of Israel to worship God, stopping them from following Baal.

The Spirit of Zeal was on Elijah. He was extremely eager to prove that “The Lord is God.” He bravely rose against Baal and his prophets and challenged them. Yes. An anointment of the fire was on him. He not only proclaimed “Lord who answers with fire is God” but also proved that the Lord is God by making the fire descend from heaven to the altar.

The only request of Elisha who followed God as a shadow was “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.”(II Kings 2:9). Accordingly, when Elijah was taken up, Elisha received the double portion of his Spirit and also the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him.

In the prophetic words about John the Baptist also we can read about the Spirit of Elijah. When the angel made the announcement to the father Zacharias he said, “He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord” (Luke 1:17).

Elijah was the prophet of the Old Testament and John the Baptist was also the last prophet of the Old Testament. Both of them had not been washed by the blood of Calvary. You, who have come to the era of the New Testament, possess the Spirit of Christ. The anointment you have received is crores of times greater than the anointment of Elisha and Elijah who belong to the era of the Old Testament.

Once, when the Samaritans did not receive Jesus, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?” Jesus turned back, rebuked and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.”

Yes, dear children of God, do not reach the stage of Elijah wherein he took revenge and sought to burn those who did not obey God. Long for Christ’s Spirit of love so that they are filled with the anointment of Christ’s love.

To meditate: “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Romans 5:5).
