Steadfast Spirit!

"Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10).

What is meant by Steadfast Spirit? Strong, powerful and unshakable Spirit is the meaning. At times David secured a very high position through his singing, worshipping and praising God. At times he struggled due to his lust for women. He bitterly cried whwn he committed sin for Bathsheba.

He thought “Why is it not possible to lead a holy life continually, why do I fall and rise every now and then, why do I get a great feeling of living at the top of a hill and why do I suffer falling in a hade” and with tears he told God, “Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

Though the Spirit acts powerfully for holiness, the deeds of satan are also there in the world. The spirit of the tempter who brings temptations is also there. It is sure that until satan is there, the dirt, sins and the lusts will act in the world. Until the wind is there, indeed the waves will rise.

Look at Peter. On one side he had love over God and zealous too but on the other side, he was weak. As the circumstances threatened him, he cursed Jesus, promised and in the end bitterly cried. When he himself was not established how could he establish others? Jesus said, “Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. When you have returned to me, strengthen your brethren.”

The word ‘Simon’ means ‘reed.’ The reed will never be strong and it will bend to any direction based on the blowing of the wind. God changed this name of ‘Simon’ as ‘Peter’ which means ‘rock.’ You should be strong in God; should be established. You should establish others. When David sought the steadfast spirit from God, He made him strong. With love, He said, “And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever” (II Samuel 7:16).

Once, a father brought his son who had a demon in him, to Jesus for deliverance. With tears, he told Jesus, “It pushed him into fire and water several times.” Fire and water have opposite qualities. Water will extinguish the fire and the fire will always oppose water. Jesus healed him and gave him a steadfast spirit. Dear children of God, without falling down often, stand as the fire for God. Pray so that you stand steadfast in holiness.

To meditate: “So then, because you are lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of my mouth”(Revelation 3:16).
