Spirit of Comfort!
“…He will give you another Helper…..I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you (John 14:16, 18).
God comforts and consoles us. He alone comforts us like a mother. He is being called as “A God with the bosom of a mother.” . See! Even at the age of 99, Abraham was in need of the mother’s comforting love (Genesis 17:1).
When Jesus came to this world, He came like a comforter for the reason that satan who is the ruler of the world hurts the people and makes them lose their peace. He creates sickness, diseases, death and sorrow. Who is there to comfort us like Jesus? Thousands of people were comforted in His ministry of thirty-three years.
The time came for his ministry to come to an end. That was the time when He was to die on the cross, get buried, rise up on the third day and climb to be seated on the right of the Lord. At that moment, Jesus thought of His disciples and felt sad. He comforted them and introduced another helper to comfort them. He is the comforting spirit or the helper.
The Holy Spirit which is the helper is not only given to the disciples but also to you today so that each one of you is comforted and consoled. He comforts you both from outside and by staying inside your heart as well. He comforts you both worldly and spiritually. He protects you in such a way that you do not slip down from your holy life.
Dear children of God, if you had received the comfort and consolation from either Christ or from the Holy Spirit, show this love to others. When people are in distress, comfort them. Build them up with your words of love and prayer so that they do not get broken out of frustration.
This world is devoid of comfort. A lot of people are struggling with deep wounds and sorrows in their hearts. There are young widows suffering because of the loss of their husbands and young children left as orphans. One who could comfort them is the Holy Spirit alone who is the helper. “As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you, and you shall be comforted in Jerusalem” (Isaiah 66:13).
In the Old Testament, the name ‘Noah’ gives the meaning ‘comforter.’ What was the reason behind Lamech to name his child as ‘Noah’? “And he called his name Noah, saying, “This one will comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which the Lord has cursed” (Genesis 5:29).
To meditate: “Comfort, yes, comfort my people!”says your God.“Speak comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her, that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned” (Isaiah 40:1, 2).
