When The Lips Are Shut!

“Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; when he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive” (Proverbs 17:28).

There was a wall hanging and the art portrayed a worm being clamped to the rod of an angler and a fish moving towards it with its mouth open. At the bottom of the picture, it was written as “If the mouth is open.” If its mouth had not been kept open, its life would have been saved. The children of God could save their souls if they refrain from speaking unnecessarily while coming across the traps. I was able to feel the picture talking to me in silence.

So, dear children of God, speak always with the feeling that God is listening to you with concern. Let your talk be crisp and at the same time clear and understandable.

I am told that Dr Krishna Menon who was India’s Defence minister some years ago was speaking in the United Nations Organization continuously for more than twenty-four hours. Who will be listening to the talk if it is so lengthy? It is true that India was unable to attain the support of the UNO. It is pretty hard for some people to explain things in a short and vivid manner.

During one of my visits abroad, while closing a meeting of mine, some one’s name was proposed for a short prayer and benediction. But the concerned person took the mike in his hands and began to sing a lengthy song. Then he took a verse and began to preach based on it. I enquired a person standing nearby about the ministry that man was involved. The person replied that the mike was his ministry. He further told that if someone unknowingly gave the mike to him he will begin to speak just like a vehicle without brakes and the people will silently disburse and go home.

It is highly essential for one to seek the spirit of wisdom so that people are enlightened with minimum usage of words. This will help one to get over false doctrines and legal tangles. Dear children of God, restrict your tongue so that you do not blabber with it. Then you will become one to spend time usefully.

James the Apostle compared the tongue with the fire. “Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity” (James 3:5, 6).

So, dear children of God, He has given the tongue to you graciously. When there are so many dumb people who struggle to speak, God has blessed you with a tongue to speak and with that rejoice to praise God.

To meditate: “The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell” (James 3:6).
