He is The Shield!

“Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward” (Genesis 15:1).

God will be a shield for you. No wicked person can harm you. He will destroy all the sorceries and witchcraft and stay as your shield. He, who touches you, touches the apple of His eye. “Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence” (Psalms 91:3).

The ‘Shield’ is one of the weapons of war. There are two kinds of weapons. One is a weapon used to attack the enemy and the other is used for defending purposes. The spear, sword and the arrow are the attacking weapons while the shield and the helmet are the weapons for defence. Further, the whole armours like girdle and sandals are also there.

Today, shall we inherit the same promises which God gave to Abraham? God chose Abraham, made him His friend and promised to give Canaan where milk and honey flew, to Abraham. When Abraham left for Canaan, Lot also combined himself with the vision of Abraham and departed. But on the way, when the immense water resources of Sodom attracted Lot, he stayed back in Gomorrah setting aside the vision of Canaan.

Some time passed by. Suddenly three rival kings invaded Sodom Gomorrah and took Lot and his family as captives. When Abraham came to know this, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants, pursued the four kings, defeated them and brought back Lot and his family.

Abraham was not a warrior but a shepherd. The love he had over Lot and the zeal that Lot was his brother were the reasons for him to go on war with those four kings and get Lot and his family released from captivity and in fact, he did not even possess sufficient defending weapons. What could he do if a war breaks against him?
God did two things. Firstly Melchizedek who was the priest of God Most High brought bread and wine to Abraham (Genesis 14:18). This bread and wine are the signs for Jesus’ flesh and His blood. It gives a great protection that ‘the Lord of lords dwells in me.’

Secondly, God said, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward” (Genesis 15:1). If He is your shield, the trials could reach you only after facing Him. Dear children of God, since God is your shield, no evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling.

To meditate: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
