Lengthen His Roots And Grow!
“I will be like the dew to Israel; He shall grow like the lily and lengthen his roots like Lebanon” (Hosea 14:5).
God compared the Israelites to the Lily among the flowers. And in lengthening the roots and growing tall, He compares them to the cedar trees of Lebanon. Lebanon is a beautiful hilly place located near the Northern boundary of God’s nation. Moses the devotee wanted to have a glimpse of the beauty of Lebanon before dying. So he requested God saying, “I pray, let me cross over and see the good land beyond the Jordan, those pleasant mountains, and Lebanon” (Deuteronomy 3:25).
The word “Lebanon” means “Pleasant Forest.” When Solomon built a beautiful palace for him, he had named it as ‘The forest of Lebanon.’ The cedar trees of Lebanon were very strong and were the best. Solomon used these trees while building the church for God and the palace for his use.
God is greater than Solomon and He says with love “My son, you will stand strong like Lebanon with lengthened roots. The sufferings and problems could not attack and make you weary. You are not a reed or a grass but a cedar tree.”
How a firm foundation holds on a tall structure, similarly the root upholds a tree. It is the root which possesses all the strength, firmness and the greatness. The root penetrates deep into the earth and reaches the water source underneath and only after this process; the tree will grow well. Only then the yield will be aplenty.
Who is the blessed? “He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper” (Psalms 1:3). If you stand deep-rooted, nothing can shake you. Bro. Jeevaanandan used to sing the following lines before beginning his sermon. “Jesus will not let me down. Even if there is going to be a severe storm or a tempest, He will not let me down.”
Peter was formerly called as Simon. Reed is the meaning for the name ‘Simon.’ Part of the reed will be immersed in water and it will grow bending above the water level. In no way, it is stronger as the cedar tree. It will bend in whatever direction the wind blows. God changed this name ‘Simon’ as ‘Peter.’ The name ‘Peter’ gives the meaning ‘as strong as a mountain.’
Dear children of God, do you stand steadfast in the prayerful life? Think over whether you are strong in faith; remain strong in the ministry; in your affection towards God and in the Lord’s house. Do you get disheartened while coming across even minor issues? Arise. Be strong and get deep rooted in God.
To meditate: “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever” (Psalms 125:1).
