The Shield of The Mighty!
“But the Lord is with me as a mighty, awesome One. Therefore my persecutors will stumble and will not prevail. They will be greatly ashamed, for they will not prosper.” (Jeremiah 20:11).
We read in II Samuel 1:21 as ‘the shield of the mighty’. There are many mighty personalities in the Scripture. Nimrod began to be a mighty one on the earth (Genesis 10:8). Joshua and all the people of war who were with him were mighty (Joshua 10:7). Gideon was a mighty man of valour!” (Judges 6:12) Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour (Judges 11:1). Saul and Jonathan were mighty men.
A warrior may be mighty to a great extent but a shield is essential for him to protect himself. In a minute’s time, from various directions, a warrior may have to face attacks through arrows or spears or swords. So, he will have to act swiftly with the shield and overcome all the arrows, spears and swords aimed at him.
Similarly for the children of God who are involved in the Spiritual war, the shield of faith is essential (Ephesians 6:16). Only then, you can quench all the fiery darts of the wicked ones. “No weapon formed against you shall prosper” (Isaiah 54:17).
An innocent man of God was arrested and dragged to the Police Station. Standing steadfast for Christ was the only crime on him. The Police Inspector who was a cruel and strong person started the interrogation, in a most violent manner. Though the Police Inspector had beaten him up several times, that man of God did not experience any pain. In fact, not a single strike had made a physical contact on him.
When God enabled him to open his spiritual eyes, he was able to see God receiving all the beatings from the Inspector, on his behalf. He realised that Christ remains as the one nailed on the cross even now and He stands as a shield to protect him. This made his heart to rise and praise God.
Dear children of God, may the Lord be your great strength and shield. Who can be so mighty like God? “The Lord shall go forth like a mighty man; He shall stir up His zeal like a man of war. He shall cry out, yes, shout aloud; He shall prevail against His enemies” (Isaiah 42:13).
Goliath who was mighty had a bronze armour on him (I Samuel 17:6) but this bronze armour did not happen to be the protective gear for him. When David attacked him with his sling, the smooth stone which came out of it pierced into the forehead of Goliath.
Dear children of God, God will be your shield of life. He will cover you with His feathers. Under His wings, you shall take refuge.
To meditate: “Behold, the Lord God shall come with a strong hand and His arm shall rule for Him; Behold, His reward is with Him” (Isaiah 40:10).
