Shield of Salvation!
“You have also given me the shield of your salvation; your gentleness has made me great” (II Samuel 22:36, Psalm 18:35).
The king who sends his warrior to war knows well what are the weapons required for him. There are also two types of shields which God gives. First is the shield of faith. It is the faith of living, relying upon God. This is the faith that God will not only fight for me but also executes everything which concerns me.
Secondly, it is the ‘Salvation’ for the children of God. This happens to be a great shield. When one is saved, he receives the great blessing of being called as ‘the child of God.’ He receives the right to be called so (John 1:12). He receives the Spirit of adoption to cry out “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15). The Salvation he received stands as the shield to protect him from satan.
The word ‘Salvation’ has another meaning too. It is the ‘Redemption.’ From what do you need redemption? Firstly, you need to be redeemed from satan and the spirits of the demon. Secondly, you need to be redeemed from the eternal judgement and the hade. You have to be redeemed from the world, flesh and satan. You need the redemption from the lust of the eye, the lust of the flesh and pride of life. Jesus has been your Redeemer or the shield.
He encountered your sins on the cross, He gave Himself as sacrifice for our sins and redeemed you from the fierceness of sins. He accepted the crown of thorns which was the curse and hanged on the cross to redeem and save you from the sin. It is a shield for you. He accepted the scars all over His body to bear all your diseases, sickness and the weaknesses. It is a big shield for you.
Even during the days of the Old Testament, the blood of the lamb was the shield for the Israelites. When the Passover lamb was sacrificed and the blood struck on the doorposts all those houses came into the protection of God. The angel of destruction could not enter those houses.
May God be a great shield not only for you but also for all your family members. That is why Joshua protected himself and all at his home behind the shield of God and proclaimed “…. as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).
Dear children of God, do you and your family remain in Christ’s fort of blood? If you remain so, no sorcery or witchcraft could destroy your family and God will be your refuge and strength and a very present help in trouble.
To meditate: “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped;” (Psalms 28:7).
