The Shield of Help!

“Happy are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord, the shield of your help and the sword of your majesty!” (Deuteronomy 33:29).

This is a rare shield. Definitely, it is not a worldly shield. The worldly shield will protect the chest and the heart alone. That’s all. But God the shield not only protects you but also helps you. Since you stand as refugee behind this shield of help, whatever be the nature of evil, the demon aims at you, those fire embers can never come close to you.

The Israelites, who began their journey from Egypt believing in God, saw God standing as a shield of help to them. Even when Pharaoh and his army came rushing towards the Israelites, God stayed as a shield and ensured that both armies do not come into contact with each other. A pillar of cloud came and stood between the two armies. It gave darkness to the Egyptians and at the same time light to the Israelites (Exodus 14:19, 20). The Red Sea which gave way for the Israelites to cross over to the other side, made the Egyptians get immersed in it.

During the days of the II World War, a warrior of England read the 91st Psalm and prayed to God to be a shield for him. In the war field, suddenly a bullet attacked him. He fell down but no damage had been done to him.

What was the reason? The New Testament which he had kept in his shirt pocket had blocked the bullet and had prevented it from entering into the chest of that warrior. He gratefully praised God saying, “But you, O Lord, are a shield for me, my glory and the One who lifts up my head” (Psalm 3:3).

Today, many parents name their children with the Tamil name “SAGAYAM” (‘சகாயம்.’). I have heard about a truthful and honest IAS officer with this Tamil name. The corrupt people are scared of this officer. He toiled hard to weed out corruption. What a great blessing these officials are to the nation!

David repeatedly says to God, “But you, O Lord, do not be far from me; O my strength, hasten to help me!” (Psalms 22:19). In Psalms 40:13 also he says, “Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me; O Lord, make haste to help me!”

Dear children of God, expect help not from the man but from God. He will never be distant from you. He will help you at the appropriate time and in the right way. So, never lament that it is getting late. God will never be early and never be late too. He will help you at the most appropriate time.

To meditate: “God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn” (Psalms 46:5).
