Like a Mother!

“As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; and you shall be comforted in Jerusalem” (Isaiah 66:13).

Our God is a loving God like a mother.’Elshadai’ is His Name. There are four different meanings of the word ‘Elshadai’ in the Hebrew language. The first meaning is “A compassionate God like a milk feeding mother.” The second is “An Almighty God like a mighty father. Thirdly He is “A God who blesses more than what we expect and what we ask for and finally “God who perfects that which concerns us.”

In the world, there is the love which a friend shows. There is also a love which a wife shows. Relatives also pour a special love. But none of these is comparable to the love of a mother. We always see God in the position of our father. At the same time, He is affectionate like a mother. He embraces us with love. He comforts, consoles and encourages us. At the age of 99, Abraham was in need of his mother’s love. God gave His vision to Abraham as Elshadai and promised to give a child to him.

How will be a mother? She never forgets her child. So, God asked with the right “Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you” (Isaiah 49:15). “As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you and you shall be comforted in Jerusalem” (Isaiah 66:13).

So, Abraham placed immeasurable faith in God. He said, “When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take care of me” (Psalms 27:10).

When I was a youth, once, I was suffering from typhoid. The bitterness in the mouth prevented me from eating anything. I was staying in a lodge with some other youth and there was no one to take care of me. One night, I experienced severe shivering due to the high fever and I began to cry at the thought of my mother. If she had been by my side, she would have prepared some suitable food for me which I could have eaten in spite of the bitterness in the mouth.

Though the doors of my room had been locked, God descended there like a mother and sat by my side. His hand touched me and rubbed me softly. He sat near me for a long time. The next day, I was filled with new found refreshment. The fever was no more with me. God did a miracle and gave me good health.

God created you in the world similar to how a mother gives birth to her children. Yes. God has the concern like that of a mother. When you lose your worldly mother, He will stay as a mother and father for you.

To meditate: “…Jesus…loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end” (John 13:1).
