“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will [a]dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23:6).

Goodness and mercy will follow you all the days of your life. While you step forward with your right leg, goodness will happen and when you put forward your left leg, mercy will happen. On all days goodness and mercy will follow you like a shadow.

Once a servant of God said, “Every one of us has been given with two angels. They are the prime angels for us.” With great surprise, I continued to listen to understand which angels he was talking about. In the end, he said, “The name of one angel is goodness and the other angel is mercy.” Yes. On all days goodness and mercy will follow you.

The curses follow some people and the fears follow some. The evil spirits follow some people and the sins follow some. The difficulties and losses also follow some people. But those things can never follow you who are the children of God. Since the Good Shepherd is going ahead of you, goodness and mercy alone will follow you.

Once, Laban who was the uncle of Jacob followed Jacob like a shadow in order to cause trouble to Jacob. But when he came near the mountains of Gilead God appeared to Laban in a dream and said to him “Be careful that you speak to Jacob neither good nor bad” (Genesis 31:23, 24).

In the end, when Laban met Jacob, he said: “This heap is a witness and this pillar is a witness, that I will not pass beyond this heap to you and you will not pass beyond this heap and this pillar to me, for harm” (Genesis 31:52).

When you come up and stand by the cross, satan cannot follow you to put you into trouble. Because God has given the victory crushing the head of satan. He has broken your since and curses too. So goodness and mercy will follow you.

How long the goodness and mercy will follow? King David says that goodness and mercy will follow for the whole of the lifetime. When Moses who was a devotee of God spoke about the lifespan of a man he said: “The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years” (Psalm 90:10).

Your lifespan may be short and it may consist of several sorrows and sufferings but in spite of all these things, goodness and mercy will follow throughout the lifetime. The reason is that God is with you. Has not God promised you “I will not leave you nor forsake you”?

“….teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age”  (Mathew 28:20).
