“Do not cast me off in the time of old age; do not forsake me when my strength fails” (Psalm 71:9).

An elderly woman had fallen ill and on knowing her condition, she was taken to the hospital by her neighbours. The treatment not yielding results, she died there itself. Only after her death, the people around came to know that she was a wealthy woman. Many came there and made all-out efforts to establish that they were related to her. While alive, the woman had the habit of maintaining a diary.

The people found a diary and the woman had made some entries even while in the hospital. She had recorded her burdens and wishes deep in the heart one by one in it. Especially, every day she had pathetically recorded “Today no one visited me. I doubt whether all the people are aware that this old woman is still alive.” The longing, expectation and mental worries would have been too much for her at that old age,

Are you spending your days like that old woman with no one around you? Do not worry. God is looking at you every day. The Scripture says, “…. Jesus, ……..having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end” (John 13:1). Never forget that Jesus Christ is there who loves you and guides you to the end.

God says, “Even to your old age, I am He and even to grey hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry and will deliver you” (Isaiah 46:4).

“They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing” (Psalm 92:14). God will strengthen you and enable you to bear fruits even in the old age and so rely upon God and do not get disheartened in solitude,

David asked God, “O God, You have taught me from my youth; and to this day I declare Your wondrous works. Now also when I am old and grey-headed, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare your strength to this generation, your power to everyone who is to come” (Psalm 71:17, 18).

As requested, God showed mercy to David. When you thank God for the good things He had done to you in the past, the faith that He is powerful to guide you also in the future will come into your mind. May God who promised “Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” stay with you and lead you even in the old age!

To meditate: “I will not leave you nor forsake you” (Joshua 1:5).
