“Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy” (I Corinthians 14:1).

In the Scripture portion of I Corinthians 12:8-10, we can read the nine different gifts of the Spirit. They are wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, different kinds of tongues and the interpretation of tongues.

Similar to the gifts of the Spirit there are also the nine fruits of the Spirit. They are love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22, 23).

God keeps all these gifts only for the purpose of giving them to you. Without obtaining the anointment of the Spirit both these gifts and fruits of the Spirit will not function in one.

Some people will fast and pray for day and night to receive the gifts of the Spirit. But as they ignore the fruits of the Spirit in their lives, they are caught in some sin or other and their ministry gets ruined.

On the other side, some people value the fruits of the Spirit alone as special, show special importance to love and thus ignore the wholeness of the Spirit and its gifts. But both the gifts of the Spirit and the fruits of the Spirit are required for you.

How should the robe of a High Priest look like? “a bell and a pomegranate, a bell and a pomegranate, all around the hem of the robe to minister in, as the Lord had commanded Moses” (Exodus 39:26).

“Bells” are the ones which make a sound. It denotes the “Gifts of the Spirit.” The Pomegranate denotes the “Fruits of the Spirit.” Both the gifts and fruits of the Spirit should be found together,

If you closely follow the three chapters 12, 13 and 14 in the book of II Corinthians, a big truth will be revealed to you. There, chapter 12 and 14 speak about the gifts of the Spirit. The chapter in between is chapter 13 and the whole of this chapter speaks about love and other fruits of the Spirit.

Some people will possess love by nature. By nature, they may possess goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. We can see many brothers belonging to Hinduism and Islam also possessing such gifts of the Spirit.

In spite of many people possessing the gifts of the Spirit, they fall down in pride as they are devoid of the fruits of the Spirit. Dear children of God, will you glorify God by receiving fruits of the Spirit also along with the gifts of the Spirit?

To meditate: “Let my beloved come to his garden and eat its pleasant fruits” (Song of Solomon 4:16).
