“And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said to him, “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valour!” (Judges 6:12).

The meaning for the name 'Gideon' is that 'one who cuts the tree'. Gideon belonged to the Manasseh ancestry. God called him saying 'You mighty man of valour.' During the days of Gideon, Israel had been kept under captivity of the Midianites. They would suddenly rise against Israel, loot the produce of the earth and also drive away the livestock. Thus Israel became a barren land. The people pleaded to God with shouts of cry.

God chose Gideon to redeem Israel from the hands of the Midianites. When the angel of God came to meet Gideon, he was thrashing wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites. He was doing the job with the fear of whether the Midianites may suddenly appear and take away the grains. It is at this situation God appeared to him and called him saying 'You mighty man of valour.'

Dear children of God, your life also might have been surrounded by such fears. You may appear to be weak, worthless and neglected by others. But God values you highly.

The reason for God calling Gideon as 'mighty' is that God was with him. With whichever person God remains, he should be mighty. You need not fear anything when God is with you. Paul the Apostle asks, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31).

Dear children of God, you are mighty indeed. The reason is that the Almighty Holy Spirit dwells in you. The Scripture says, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8).

Similar to how Gideon feared the Midianites in the Old Testament, the disciples feared the scribes, Pharisees and the Sadducees. But God assembled them in the Upper Room and filled them with the Holy Spirit. The disciples who had the sense of fear in them were filled with the power of the High and they turned into fiery flames. They appeared like a sharpened axe.

God not only called Gideon 'mighty' but He also used him mightily. In the same way, God calls you as 'mighty' so that you defeat the army of satan and bring in revivals in the nation.

Dear children of God, will you bring out your mightiness for the sake of God?

To meditate:- “The glory of young men is their strength and the splendour of old men is their grey head” (Proverbs 20:29).
