“I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion” (Exodus 33:19).

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us (Ephesians 2:4). The first thing we have to do to receive the mercy of God is to love Him. You have to show your first love and whole love only to God. When you show your love to Him, He will graciously shower His mercy on you.

God says, ".... but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love me and keep my commandments" (Exodus 20:6). God is the one who protects all those who love Him. God longs for love. He rejoices in your love, praise and worship. Of the Ten Commandments, the first one is "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength" (Deuteronomy 6:5).

You have to not only show love towards God but also you have to follow the Ten Commandments. The commandments of God are not hard to follow but they are easy to follow to those who show love towards God. Did He not say “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Mathew 11:30)?

Jesus not only showed love on Father but He also followed His commandments. That is why He said, “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in His love” (John 15:10). Love Him with all your heart and follow all His commandments so that His mercy increases in you.

See, David realized his faults and did not stop with saying “I am in great distress. Please let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man” (II Samuel 24:14) but he dedicated himself to the hands of God, built an altar and made the burnt offering, leaning upon God.

God listened to that prayer of tears. Showing mercy to David, God saved Israel from the destruction. Dear children of God, never seek God relying upon your self-righteousness but get nearer to His feet placing your hope on his mercy. His mercies are great.

Will you pray as Daniel prayed saying, “We do not present our supplications before you because of our righteous deeds, but because of your great mercies” (Daniel 9:18)? When you pray so, God will be merciful on you.

To meditate: “He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy” (Proverbs 28:13).
