"But he was sad at this word and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions" (Mark 10:22).

One young man sidelined Jesus Christ and chose his wealth and so went away sorrowful. Indeed he was fine when he came to Jesus. He came running to Jesus and asked: "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?" (Mark 10:17). “He came running,” says the Scripture.

Jesus told him, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God" (Mark 10:25). But his possessions stood as the stumbling block preventing him from following Christ. If only he had chosen Jesus Christ instead of his wealth, he would have become an Apostle or a powerful servant of God. He would have preserved a lot of treasures in heaven.

There was a big rich man in a town. Every time his income increases by one crore, he will hoist a flag at the top of his house. His intention was that all the people around should know that he was a multi-millionaire and thus out of pride he had been doing this.

One day a servant of God came to his home. The rich man thought that the servant of God had come to seek money from him citing some ministry or other such cause. The rich man’s immediate thinking was just what excuses could be told to him so that giving of money is avoided.

But that servant of God told the rich man “I did not come here seeking any donations. I have a pin with me and I am giving it to you. Keep it safe and when you come to heaven bring it there and return it to me.” Saying this he went away.

The rich man did not know what to do. His wife explained to him “The pastor has given this pin to you only to make you understand the fact that you cannot carry even this pin with you when you go to heaven. You cannot take these crores of rupees or the flags you have hoisted to indicate how much you have when you depart from this world.”

Dear children of God, which do you choose? Zacchaeus chose Christ and he decided to follow Christ after giving half of his wealth to the poor and returned fourfold all he had earned through false accusation. You also may choose the good part which is Jesus Christ. Preserve your treasures in heaven.

To meditate: "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows" (I Timothy 6:10).
