“Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready” (Luke 22:12).
Jesus Christ asked His disciples to make ready an upper room for the purpose of preparing Passover. When they asked Him where the upper room should be, He said, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?” Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.” So they went and found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover (Luke 22:10-13).
In the ministry, Jesus Christ who did not worry about day and night kept wandering about was in need of an upper room to stay alone with the disciples. Yes. That was the last supper He had with His disciples. There, the furnishing which is the 'preparation' had been made ready. Jesus opened His heart and spoke to the disciples.
The disciples were filled with the Lord's love. Breaking the bread, Jesus said, Take, eat; this is my body.” Then He took the cup and He said to them, “This is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many." The upper room experience was an unforgettable one for the disciples. It happened to be the last instance of the disciples staying alone with Jesus.
The upper room experience is essential for you to have a relationship with Jesus. Your family problems, struggles and worries may be present in the lower room but allocate certain time in the upper room to stay alone with Jesus.
You may put questions like these. "Why should Jesus have an upper room? Why should Christ opt for a storied structure while he had humbly chosen an inn during His birth? The Son of man had taken refuge in a hut of a poor carpenter and why should He opt for a big house now?" May it be a hut or a palace; may it be a poor man or a rich man; may it be a hut dweller or a person living in a palace; all are the children of God.
Dear children of God, never forget that the Spiritual experience of the upper room is very essential for you. In this world where the worries and tears are in plenty, long for the experience of staying alone with Jesus in the upper room. It is the Spiritual experience of the upper room which could bring you divine peace when you are encircled by sorrow and sadness.
To meditate: “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest” (Mathew 11:28).
