“For how great is its goodness and how great its beauty” (Zachariah 9:17)

One of the characteristics of God is His compassion. He is filled with compassion. "How great is its goodness!" says Zachariah and Psalmist David says "The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord" (Psalm 33:5).

I. COMPASSION WHICH ATTRACTS THE MANKIND:- “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness, I have drawn you” (Jeremiah 31:3). God pulls you towards Him similar to how a piece of the magnet attracts the iron substances. This compassion reveals His depth of love. If at all you have come closer to God, the reason is nothing but His compassion. Think of this compassion and thank God for that. Meditate to know how great the compassion of Calvary is.

II. COMPASSION WHICH PROTECTS THE MANKIND:- “For you, O Lord will bless the righteous; with the favour, you will surround him as with a shield” (Psalm 5:12). David who had fought hundreds of wars compares the compassion to a shield. The divine compassion is so useful to the children of God in their lives as how a shield is useful to a warrior. It protects one by keeping all the fiery darts of the wicked one away.

David faced so many problems in his life. Wild animals like lion and bear came opposing him. The giant Goliath opposed him. God protected David with His compassion which is the shield. Further, in certain situations, he had to hide in places like mountains, caves and wilderness. During all those situations, he felt the compassion of God which saved him. Dear children of God, you also may stay in the refuge of that compassion.

III. COMPASSION WHICH EXALTS THE MANKIND:- “Your gentleness has made me great” (Psalm 18:35). David's witness was that if at all there is a basic reason for his upliftment, it is nothing but the compassion of God. Today people try to get elevated by themselves. They think that with the support of the politicians and ministers they can rise high in their lives. But David did not place his belief in a man whose breath is in his nostrils but relied upon the compassion of God and said: "Your compassion will make me great."

Indeed the brothers of David were warriors. They had worked in the palace of God. But not one of them was chosen by God. But the compassion of God was surrounding David who had been rearing the sheep. Dear children of God, God who anointed David with His compassion will also anoint and exalt everyone of you.

To meditate: “…..as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue” (II Peter 1:3).
