“Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved” (Matthew 9:17).
When Christ comes into a person's life, he becomes a new creation. In him, new life, new power, new grace, new Spiritual friends, new fellowship and so on are created. Yes, he becomes an entirely new person.
When some people put a piece of new cloth on an old garment the patch pulls away the garment and the tear is made worse. Likewise, when they put new wine into old wineskins, the wineskins break and the wine is also spilled.
Dear children of God, when you come into Christ, you have to get rid of all the sins, natures and lusts which were thus far with you and get united with God and His children. One should not stay in between the devil and the deep blue sea. It is impossible for a person to travel standing on two catamarans. There is no communion between the light and the darkness. Likewise, there is no accord between Christ and Belial.
The new wine denotes the blood of Christ. At the beginning of His ministry, He turned water into wine. In the end, He took the cup of wine after supper and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is shed for you." The wine indicates the new heart washed with the blood of Christ. In the same way, the wineskins should also be new. Paul the Apostle writes, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2).
Jesus Christ also turns your life into new wine. He is the one to turn water into wine. The water has no smell, taste or colour but the wine possesses all these factors. The first miracle of Christ is to turn water into wine. You may be an ordinary person but He changes you into a person with divine characteristics. You not only receive a divine image and divine nature but you also become a blessed one.
Your life will be sweet if you dwell and have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Dear children of God, you should never go back to your worldly lusts, once you taste the sweetness of Christ. You should not run behind the worldly pleasures, neglecting the love of Christ. When God has turned you into wine, you should not go back to be mere water.
To meditate: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:25).
