“No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed” (Luke 8:16).

While some people cover the burning light with a basket, some others cover it with a vessel and some more people keep the burning lamp under the cot. They keep the burning lamp under the cot and sleep deeply. They lead a luxurious life and are afflicted with the spirit of stupor.

Keeping the burning lamp under the cot is a dangerous act. What will happen to those who sleep if the fire spreads to the cot? Some people cite lame excuses like ‘sleep is a blessing’ and so on. They even cite the verse “for so He gives His beloved sleep” (Psalms 127:2) and sleep all the time.

Sleeping and resting are essential indeed but excessive sleeping and luxurious life will extinguish the Spiritual life. These people are attracted by the prosperity blessings and thus lose the presence of God and bring loss to their souls. God cautions you not to keep the burning lamp under the cot.

Samson was the judge of Israel and he had been chosen by God. But when he fell asleep he lost his strength. When he woke up, his eyes were plucked. He was bound with bronze fetters and became a grinder in the prison.

The Scripture says, “but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way” (Matthew 13:25). It is in the time when you sleep, satan sows the tares among the wheat. When we sleep satan sows the deeds of fear, seeds of defeat and seeds of unbelief and goes away.

In the New Testament, we read about a person called Eutychus. Though many lamps were burning in the upper room, this man fell asleep when Paul the apostle was preaching. This sleep made him fall from the third floor and he was taken up dead (Acts 20:6, 9). Dear children of God watch and pray.

Paul the Apostle writes, “And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now, our salvation is nearer than when we first believed” (Romans 13:11). Dear children of God, do not light the lamp and keep it under the cot.

To meditate: “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation” (Mark 14:37, 38)
