“I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead” (Philippians 3:8, 11).
The great desire of Paul the Apostle was to be found good at the time of Christ’s Second Coming and to be fit enough to resurrect from the dead. Thus he points out “by any means.”
The student will say that they have to score pass marks in the examinations at any cost. For higher education, they would try for admission in colleges and at such instances also they will say that they should secure a seat at any cost. The merchants also will try to sell their goods fast in that way. Some people will resort to short cuts to achieve their goal at any cost.
But, Paul the Apostle did not go for any short cut. He might have increased his fasting, prayerful life and holiness to achieve the goal at any cost. His eyes were always on the lookout to become eligible to rise from the dead.
In Christian life, it is not possible for anyone to say that he or she has attained eligibility. Paul, the Apostle who has written fourteen books is still of the view that he has not become fully fit for the purpose. It is true that he was caught up to the third heaven, he was the steward of the mysteries of God, he was the one to meet God face to face, he visited country after country to install churches and it is also true that it is fully justified to call him an apostle but in spite of all these greatness, he does not take it for granted but with all humbleness says that he has to achieve it at any cost.
It is essential that you have to place yourself in the presence of God and evaluate yourself. Pray saying, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalms 139:23, 24).
You have to be cleansed day after day if you want to become eligible to participate in Resurrection. If a person of Paul’s calibre had so much of burden, complaint and shiver to become eligible, how a lot should it be for a lame person like you!
Paul the Apostle says, “But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified” (I Corinthians 9:27). Dear children of God, when you make efforts to achieve the eligibility at any cost, your heart will pant for the holiness. You will run ahead leaving out all the worldly pleasures and lusts. If you fail to achieve it at any cost, someone else might take away your crown of life.
To meditate: “Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown” (Revelation 3:11).
