“My soul thirsts for God, for the living God” (Psalms 42:2).

Thirst over God is the sign for the Spiritual healthiness. This should find a place in the divinity of the inner man, holiness and the perfection of the Spiritual life.

The first is the thirst over Salvation. It is to quench this thirst, that God has promised the water of life. A man desires to get remission of his sins and thereby receive the joy of Salvation. He also likes to get rid of his guilty conscience and get filled with heavenly blessings. Jesus said, “But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14). God quenches the thirst for Salvation with the spring of the water of life. It is that which overflows within you like the joy of Salvation.

The second is spiritual thirst. Those who have been saved should have a thirst over great things. It is the spiritual thirst. This thirst is very much essential for you to worship God and to receive the gifts and powers of the Holy Spirit. The Scripture says, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24).

In those days, Jesus gave a challenging call to those who had this thirst. We read in the Scripture, “On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given because Jesus was not yet glorified” (John 7:37-39).

God said this comparing the anointment of the Holy Spirit with the rivers of living water. The spring of Salvation will be beneficial only to those who receive it. But the anointment of the Holy Spirit would be sufficient to quench the thirst of many. You should have desire and thirst over the anointment of the Holy Spirit.

The third is perfection in Christ. One should not stop with receiving the anointment of the Holy Spirit but should desire to receive the perfection in Christ. Therefore you shall be perfect in virtue, just as your Father in heaven is perfect in virtue. Dear children of God, if these thirsts are abundant in you, all the blessings will come in search of you.

To meditate: “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for you, O God” (Psalms 42:1).
